The Beginning of Sawomi: A Dream Rooted in Heritage and Responsibility

Every brand has a story.

The story of Sawomi is not just about starting a business, but about preserving Himachali handloom heritage, standing for honesty, and creating a meaningful future for the people behind the craft.

My name is Gagan, and the foundation of Sawomi is deeply connected to my childhood, where Himachali handloom was not just work—it was a way of life.

A Family Legacy of Himachali Handloom

I was born into a family where Himachali handloom manufacturing has been our traditional business for generations. From a very young age, I grew up listening to the sound of looms, watching raw wool being transformed into shawls, and observing the hard work of skilled weavers.

For us, handloom was never just a source of income—it was our identity. I saw early on how much time, patience, and dedication goes into creating pure wool Himachali shawls, often taking days to complete a single piece.

This environment naturally nurtured my interest and passion for business.

Education and Textile Engineering (2015)

In 2015, I got the opportunity to study Textile Engineering, which became a turning point in my journey.

While I already understood traditional handloom practices, my education helped me gain technical knowledge about:

  • Fabric and yarn science
  • Wool quality and processing
  • Modern textile techniques
  • Quality control and finishing

This blend of traditional wisdom and modern textile knowledge shaped my vision for the future.

Returning Home in 2019: Getting Straight to Work

After completing my studies, I returned home in 2019. Instead of choosing a corporate job or moving to a big city, I decided to work directly in our Himachali handloom manufacturing unit.

My goal was clear:

👉 To strengthen and expand our traditional handloom manufacturing

👉 To enhance the quality of pure wool handloom products

However, the journey was far from easy.

The Early Years: Slow Growth, Deep Learning

The initial years were slow and challenging. Instead of rushing growth, I focused on understanding the market by:

  • Visiting different regions and markets
  • Analyzing customer preferences and tastes
  • Studying design trends, colors, and patterns
  • Learning pricing strategies and quality expectations

This phase taught me an important lesson—every market is different, and real growth begins with understanding the customer.

Gradual Growth and Pan-India Reach

Over time, we refined our products.

Designs improved, finishing became better, and quality standards were strengthened.

During this period, we connected with platforms that allowed us to deliver Himachali handloom products across India. This was a major milestone for us.

Our pure wool shawls were no longer limited to local markets—they started reaching customers across the country.

A Bigger Question After Local Stability

Once we achieved stable growth in the local market, I began questioning the next step.

I noticed that our weavers were putting in immense effort, yet the recognition and value were often taken by others.

The Reality of the Online Market

As I explored the online market more deeply, one thing became very clear:

Brands with strong marketing were selling low-value products at very high prices often mislabeling machine-made products as handloom

Customers were being misled, and authenticity was being compromised.

This realization disturbed me deeply.

The Birth of Sawomi: A Brand Built on Change

This is where the idea of Sawomi was born.

Sawomi was not created just to launch another brand, but to bring real change by:

  • Promoting authentic Himachali handloom
  • Offering pure wool products at fair prices
  • Making quality more important than aggressive marketing
  • Giving rightful recognition to our weavers

Sawomi is a platform built on transparency—what you see is exactly what you receive.

Creating a Name for Our Weavers

For me, Sawomi is not just my brand—it represents the name and identity of our weavers.

The artisans who:

  • Sit at looms even during harsh winters
  • Pour their skills into every shawl
  • Have worked for years without recognition

Sawomi aims to ensure that when someone buys a Himachali handloom shawl, they understand the craftsmanship, effort, and story behind it.

The Journey Continues…

This is how Sawomi began—but this is not the end of the story.

There is a deeper meaning behind the name Sawomi, a thought and emotion that shaped it.
